John Wilson Memorial @ Thunderhill Raceway, 4/26/08
Kyle, Tx., (April 26th 2008) For the second weekend in a row, the Texas Super Racing Series, held court at Thunderhill Raceway, just south of Austin. Along with the TSRS, were the Texas Pro Sedans, Dwarf Cars, and local classes, ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks(John Wilson 35), and NASKarts.
Backing up last weeks pole run, Heath Stewart driving a car out of the New stable, set the quickest time with a 15.348 in the Southside Wrecker, Lozano Brothers Race Engines, Lefthander Chassis. Brian Moczygemba, Jake Kruger, Chris Schild, Robert Barker and Bobby Teer jr. finished the top six qualifiers for the draw to invert.
"We've got a good car this year," commented Stewart. "I like this car, it's a lot of fun to drive. I haven't really seen how fast it will go. I haven't had to push it that hard. It's a lot better car than we had last week."
"We drew a three this week. I'm probably going to take my time at first and see if the car comes in. Then try to get the lead as fast as I can and make sure the car doesn't go away."
" 'B' (Brian Moczygemba) drew the pole. I don't really have any tricks(to get by him). It's just a matter of how his car handles. The longer we run, the better our car gets. I think if we can get some good laps in, it will be to our advantage. Hopefully he'll make a mistake. If he doesn't, I won't be able to just blow right by him though."
Moczygemba Motors to TSRS Main Win
Young Brian Moczygemba used track position to his favor as he grabbed his second TSRS career victory, in his short time running the series. Moczygemba, who drew the pole position after qualifying second, got out front at the drop of the green, held off hard charging and last weeks winner, Heath Stewart and 75 green flag laps later, found himself in victory lane.
As green waved on the 16-car, 75 lap TSRS Main event, Moczygemba was first into turn 1, while in the pack Kruger got turned around and collected Jason Hollander. Dillon Spreen, Cary Stapp, Allen Alexander and Robert Walton also got caught up in the melee. Spreen and Alexander both pitted and returned, with Stapp rejoining just as the green waved again.
One again, Moczygemba jumped out into the lead leaving Bobby Teer jr. and Stewart side by side for second. Stewart secured second on lap 1, while Robert Barker and former TSRS champion, Chris Schild kept Teer hung out grabbing third and fourth. Stewart wasted little time in beginning his challenge on Moczygemba. By lap 10, the top three had begun to put distance on the rest of the field.
The lead trio ran up on slower traffic on lap 22, giving Stewart the chance to get a bumper on Moczygemba. In the battle for fourth, Teer tried to get back by Schild, but ended up giving up fifth to former San Antonio Speedway Late Model champ, Joe Aramendia. That three car fight continued nose to tail as the race approached halfway.
At the crossed flags it was Moczygemba, Stewart, Barker, Schild, Aramendia and Teer holding the top six spots. Aramendia then put the heat on Schild, taking fourth on lap 39. Moczygemba and Stewart got clear of Barker on lap 45 as he lost track of the lead duo. As the lead duo increased their margin, Aramendia got away from the Schild, Teer battle for fifth.
Stewart was able to get the bumper back on Moczygemba as they ran up on lapped traffic with 20 laps to go. Stewart continued to rap on the bumper of Moczygemba, but never hard enough to get the leader out of shape. Teer was able to finally get past Schild on lap 64, while Adam Haugh closed in on that fight. Stewart gave it his all, but in the final laps started to loose touch. As the white waved, Moczygemba in the Aramendia Plumbing, Premier Minerals, Southwest Paint & Body, Royal Purple, G.T. Sirrizotti Excavating, Cat Daddy Race Engines, Port City Chassis, had finally got two car lengths of breathing room in his run to the checkers.
“We just went out there and tried to run our race,” said Moczygemba. “I just focused on what was in front of me, not behind me. Tried to stay on the bottom, run a clean line and stay out of trouble.”
“I was a little concerned about Heath(Stewart). I knew he was faster than me. I just tried to keep it under control. He didn't ever get into me too hard. He raced me really clean. I have to thank him for that. I'll do the same for him, too. I was more worried about messing up and not catching it.”
“My spotter did a great job. I was just looking out the windshield. He did a good job keeping me calm and collected. He'd let know when Heath was pressuring me and when I had a little room.”
“We're planning on running the full schedule and chasing the points championship, unless something happens. We're looking to run up front every week.”
Stewart, who now has a first and second in the opening races, stated, “He ran a good race and didn't make any mistakes. I gave him as much pressure as I could without taking him out. At times he'd be able to get away from me and I'd have to let the tires cool off for a few laps. Then I could catch back up. I think we were both playing that same game. It was a good race.”
“ I'm excited about going to Houston next race. I think we can get a win, that's one of my favorite tracks. I seem to drive a little better there than I do here. I Think we'll have a good shot at it.”
