NASCAR driver blasts officials
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., April 26 (UPI) --
NASCAR driver Tony Stewart accused the Daytona Beach, Fla., based league of improper officiating during a Nextel Cup race.
Stewart said during his Sirius Satellite Radio this week program that officials at the Phoenix International Raceway -- where he finished second Saturday -- gave yellow flags for debris on the track at improper times for no other reason than to keep the race close, USA Today reported Thursday.
He even compared the racing association to professional wrestling.
"It's about the integrity of the sport," Stewart said. "When I feel our own sanctioning body isn't taking care of that, it's hard to support them and feel proud about being a driver in the Nextel Cup Series. I guess NASCAR thinks, 'Hey wrestling worked, and it was for the most part staged, so I guess it's going to work in racing, too.'"
NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said the driver's statements were "very, very disappointing." He said in statement that the officials were looking out for the safety of the drivers.
