NASCAR on Tuesday suspended four crew chiefs from Daytona Speedweeks and handed out points penalties and fines as well, as the sanctioning body made good on CEO Brian France’s earlier in the day to vow to severely ratchet up penalties.
Crew chiefs Robbie Reiser and Kenny Francis were bounced for four races each, two days after the Roush Racing Ford of Matt Kenseth and the Evernham Motorsports Dodge of Kasey Kahne were found with unapproved aerodynamic modifications. In addition, the crew chiefs were fined $50,000 each, the teams docked 50 car owner points each and the drivers were fined 50 driver points each. The infractions for these cars were discovered after qualifying.
In addition, Evernham’s other two crew chiefs, Rodney Childers (Scott Riggs) and Josh Browne (Elliott Sadler) were suspended for two races, fined $25,000 and the teams slapped with penalties of 25 owner and driver points each for separate violations discovered before qualifying.
All four crew chiefs will be allowed to appeal the decisions, which could allow them to remain for the Daytona 500.
No action was announced regarding Michael Waltrip, whose No. 55 Toyota Camry was impounded Sunday after a mysterious substance was found in its intake manifold.
The penalties issue to Reiser and Francis, were more severe than the one handed out to Chad Knaus last year, after Jimmie Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was found with a movable rear window after Daytona 500 qualifying. Knaus was suspended for four races then, but there were no points penalties handed out to the team.
