Joliet, IL (Sports Network) - Jeff Burton captured the pole for Sunday's USG Sheetrock 400 at the Chicagoland Speedway. The No.31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet circled the 1.5-mile oval in 29.728 seconds (181.647 m.p.h.).
The pole victory was Burton's second of the season and fourth of his Nextel Cup career. His other pole win this season was at the Daytona 500 in February.
"It feels really good," said Burton. "I'm really proud of everybody at RCR, this group is a really good group.
"It's a really fun race track. The groove has widened out...as the track has gotten older its gotten better."
Starting on the front row with Burton will be Brian Vickers who posted a time of 29.782 seconds.
Kasey Kahne (29.886) and Burton's RCR teammate Kevin Harvick (29.930) will make up row two.
Nextel Cup Series points leader Jimmie Johnson (29.935) was fifth quickest.
Its deja vu all over again for the Nextel Cup Series as Tony Stewart gets as hot as the weather for the second consecutive year.
In 2005, Stewart won both at Infineon and Daytona on the way to a dominating summer season that helped him win his second Nextel Cup title. The No.20 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet followed up his back-to-back wins in 2005 with a fifth in Chicagoland, a win at New Hampshire, a seventh place at Pocono and then another pair of wins at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen.
Stewart was on his way to a top-five finish at Infineon two weeks ago before an engine problem derailed him. But he bounced back with a win at Daytona on Saturday night and jumped over two drivers in the standings.
Stewart is now solidly in fifth-place overall just 32 points behind third place Dale Earnhardt Jr.
"We needed this, we've had two really rough weeks so it's nice to finish this one off here," said Stewart, who will start 34th.
He's trying to become the first driver since Jeff Gordon in 1997-98 to win consecutive titles.
Other drivers and their starting positions: Denny Hamlin (7th), Matt Kenseth (8th), Mark Martin (9th), J.J. Yeley (10th), Ryan Newman (12th), Jeff Gordon (13th), Kurt Busch (19th), Earnhardt Jr. (25th) and Greg Biffle (27th).
The race is scheduled to drop the green flag at 3:35 p.m. (et).
