I-37 Speedway in Pleasanton Purchased by Joe and Jackie Gonzales of San Antonio; Jim Knudtson to Serve as Track Director of "I-37 Raceway"
by TQ Jones
Pleasanton, TX (January 11, 2008) – Following negotiations during the short Texas racing off-season, San Antonio residents Joe and Jackie Gonzales have purchased I-37 Speedway here and plan to run a full 16-plus racing season in 2008, new Track Director Jim Knudtson announced today following the real estate closing.
The first three race dates at what will now be known as I-37 Raceway will be March 14, 21 and 28, 2008, with a full schedule to be announced as soon as possible.
"We're going to run a full 16-race regular season plus some special events," Knudtson said in making the announcement. "As of now, the rules are set as they were in 2007 and we don't plan any significant changes. We'll still be racing on Friday nights, and long time South Texas Speedway promoter Owen Pittman has agreed to manage our Friday night show as well as his Saturday show. Obviously we'll be working hand in hand with Pittman. Cassie Hunter, well-known to racers at I-37 Raceway, will serve as Track Secretary.
"As we said, we don't plan any significant changes. The Modified and Sport Modified classes will be IMCA-sanctioned in 2008, and a drivers' meeting will be held at the Bill Miller's BBQ at I-37 and Loop 1604 south of San Antonio at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. We want to be 'racer friendly,' so we want your thoughts and ideas.
"We plan to have the date for a 'work day' early next week and a 'test and tune' day will be scheduled soon after the work day." Knudtson also asked that anyone who has worked at I-37 Speedway or San Antonio Speedway in the past send him an email (jmknudtson@aol.com) if they are interested in working at the track.
There will be a full release to the media with more information soon, but both Knudtson and Joe and Jackie Gonzales wanted to get the news regarding the purchase out to racers and fans as soon as possible.
