Two TPS drivers split Twin Features Races at SAS
San Antonio, Texas – July 15, 2006 – By Neil Upchurch – TPS Race Director
For the second time in the historic racing record of the Texas Pro Sedans, two Feature races were contested on the same race night. The starting grid format was changed since the first event of this type on April 15th at SAS. In the Twin Feature races Feature race #1 inverted the top half of the field from 2006 TPS point standings. The second Feature Race inverted all lead lap finishers from Feature race #1.
The winner of the first 20 lap Feature Race was Tom Johnson in his VW Rabbit. He bested a starting field of 17 cars and crossed the finish line with a 4.67 second margin of victory over the runner-up Lalo Leal in his and Rico Gutierrez’s Ford Mustang. Tom Johnson was the TPS “Rookie of the Year” in 2005. The win was his first victory in TPS racing
In the first 20 lap Feature race, Donnie Moore saw his five race winning streak come to an end in the familiar #70 VW Scirocco which is owned by George Merrell and headquartered in Kingsland, Texas. Moore ran near the front until carburetor problems caused him to pit on lap 11. Defending TPS Champion Sergio Hexsel was running in second place until on lap 12 when the leader, Jamie Garner spun out of turn 2. Hexsel contacted Garner’s VW. Garner continued , but Hexsel’s VW Rabbit was out for the night with suspension damage.
The winner of the second 20 lap Feature Race was Donnie Moore in the #70 VW Scirocco. He took the checkered flag ahead of a smaller starting field of 16 cars due to attrition from race #1 and crossed the finish line with a 1.46 second margin of victory over the second place driver, John Wasek, driving his new #47 VW Scirocco.
Jack Dishman was blacked flagged out of first place during both Feature Races when his #2 Ford Mustang produced smoke and dropped oil on the track due to a cam cover leak.
The Texas Pro Sedans were again the largest class at SAS on July 15. The event had an entry list of 26 cars. 19 cars signed in at the SAS pit gate. The second Feature race had a reduced starting field of Texas Pro Sedans due to attrition from the first Feature race.
By contesting two races on the same date, the TPS driver point standings were shuffled like a deck of cards. With his performance in each of the Twin Features Races, Donnie Moore continues to lead the 2006 Texas Pro Sedans driver championship points chase.
The next Texas Pro Sedans race will be at Thunder Hill Raceway on Saturday, July 22 in a “make-up” rain date from July 2. In the event, two 8 lap qualifying heat races and a 20 lap feature race will be contested.
