Icebreaker @ Abilene Speedway 2/19-21/1
By J M Hallas
Abilene, Tx., (Feb. 19th, 2010) Abilene Speedway kicked off it's 2010 season with it's annual Icebreaker event on the ¼ mile semi-banked red clay oval. Drivers and teams from Texas, New Mexico, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Minnesota signed in for the four IMCA classes(Modifieds, Southern Sportmods, Stock Car, Hobby Stock)
Through heats and B-mains the fields were pared down to the fastest 20 drivers in class to complete in the A-main events.
Saturday night's event include the first in a series of Regional racs for the IMCA Sportmods, along with the west Texas 305 Sprint cars.
Bolton Bests field in Modified Main
Lubbock's Monte Bolton was class of the pack in the 20-car IMCA Modified season opener. Bolton worked his way up from row three taking over the top spot near midway from early leader, and coincidently his car owner, Tommy Fain. Bolton had to hold off the charge of David Elliott after a restart to snag the Icebreaker victory.
As green waved for the 20-lap event Fain, from outside row one took the point, with D. Elliott, Charles Brewer and Bolton in pursuit. Back in the pack it was two and three wide as drivers sorted themselves out. D. Elliott got along side Fain on lap 1, while Bolton moved in on both. A multi-car pile up in turn 3 brought the action to a halt early.
Once back to green, Brewer took a look on D. Elliott, but couldn't get by and giving Bolton a run for third. After clearing Brewer, Bolton and D. Elliott ran side by side until Bolton secured second on lap 4. As Bolton closed on Fain, Kevin Goben got past D. Elliott for fourth. Caution waved on lap 6 for debris between turns 3-4.
Bolton used the restart to get a jump on Fain, while Gabe Tucker and Danny Hogue slipped by Goben for fifth and sixth. With Bolton now in the lead, D. Elliott and Brewer battled for third and caught Fain. At the crossed flags it was Bolton, D. Elliott, Fain, Brewer and Tucker in the top five. Tucker got around Brewer for fourth on lap 11 as Hogue spun from sixth to bring out a yellow.
Bolton and D. Elliott took off on green leaving Brewer an Fain wheel to wheel for third. Chris Dawson was on the march from near the back reeling in Tucker for fifth, but spun in turn 1 on lap 14 bringing out the yellow. As green waved again, Bolton tried the low side giving D. Elliott a run up. D. Elliott snuck by in turns 1-2, but Bolton fought back holding on to the lead.
Fain began to fade with a sour motor, giving way to Goben for sixth before pulling to the infield. Bolton began putting some distance on D. Elliott, Brewer and Tucker, while Goben and Chris Abelson ran side by side for fifth. In the waning laps Abelson made a run getting around Goben on lap 17, then Brewer and Tucker on the final lap. Out front it was Bolton in the Ed Performance Engines, TRE Chassis taking the checkers unchallenged.
“It took a little bit of luck and figuring out the track,” replied Bolton. “You had to chase the track around tonight, but mostly it was luck. The bottom was good in one and two, but you had to run the top in three and four so you had to have a ca that would work in both places. We had a real neutral car and it worked out well.”

Patterson Pounds Sportmod Pack
Veteran Abilene racer, Mark Patterson jumped out front early then showed his dominance pulling out to a huge lead. Patterson used his track experience on restarts to easily rebuild big leads. Driving the Hicks Farms, Malcom Supply, Clyde's Machine powered, Larsen Chassis, Patterson scored the wire to wire win.
The 20-car, 20-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod main started three wide in turn 1, with Patterson sneaking to the front from row two. Danny Hogue, Steve Hayes fell in line, while Bradley Poor and Gary Underwood ran side by side for fifth. 2009 Southern Challenge winner, Jeff Emerson moved in to take fifth from Underwood on lap 2, then fourth from Poor on lap 3. Hogue did a half spin from second falling to fifth and opening a gap between Patterson and the field.
With Patterson building a huge lead, Emerson reeled in Hayes for second when yellow waved for a track tire on the racing surface. Once back to green, Poor tried to retake the spot from Emerson, while Tyler Fain and Hogue ran wheel to wheel for fifth. Just before halfway Dustin Robinson spun in turn 4 to bring out a caution. Emerson got around Hayes for second on the restart, but Patterson was already on the move edging away.
Poor was able to get third from Hayes on lap 12, but a tap by Ty. Fain sent Hayes around on lap 14. The top four of Patterson, Emerson, Poor and Underwood broke away as racing resumed leaving Tucker, Stephen Abbey, Hogue and Brandon Smith battling for sixth. As Abbey moved forward, Hogue, Matt Mueller and Smith were three wide for sixth. Patterson inched away from Emerson in the final circuits to grab the victory.
“It was mainly just being smooth and staying out of the ruts,” said Patterson.” I didn't how big my lead was or who was back there. I was just looking out the windshield. Until I saw someone, it was my race. That's the way my dad taught me.”
“Dwayne Hicks owns the car and he works on it all the time. He dos all the set up. I just tell him if it's loose or tight. I couldn't even tell ya what springs or shocks are on it. He does a good job, works hard on his car and he goes to win.”

Phillips moved along side Jones for second, while another National Champion, Damon Murty made his way up to sixth splitting John Armstrong and Jason Adcock.

Stute Surprised Taking Hobby Stock Honors
Nebraska's Litton Stute was in the proverbial right place at the right time and ended up the surprise winner of the 20-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Li. Stute ran behind his dad, Leland Stute before giving way to multi-time National Champion Shannon Anderson. On the final corner of the final lap, Anderson and Le. Stute tangled with both in the infield and Li. Stute finding himself first across the line in the Riverview Farms, D&S Tires, Hoelsbeck Racing, Dyna-Gro Seeds, Mycogen, Drunken Farmer Chassis.
Le. Stute jumped out front of the 19-car IMCA Hobby Stock feature with his son, Anderson, Adam Reeves and Hans Houfek moving up after Aaron Elliott slid high in turn 1. The yellow waved on lap 3 after an infield tire got kicked on the track by South Regional Champion, Charles Cosper who pulled off. On the restart Houfek got fourth from Reeves, with Dusty Poessnecker and Nyle Godwin followng to fifth and sixth.
Anderson was just starting t challenge Li. Stute for second when Reeves, Terry Comer and Tommy Phillips tangled on top of turn 3 to bring out caution. On green the top three pulled away leaving Houfek and Poessnecker door to door for fifth. At the midway point it was Le. Sute, Li. Stute, Anderson, Poessnecker and Houfek in the top five, while Dustin Mims worked his way to seventh from the back.
Godwin got by Houfek for fifth on lap 12, with Mims following to sixth. As Anderson was taking second from Li. Stute on lap 13, Kyle Hein, David Bissonnete and Tobie Talk were three wide for eighth. Poessncker and Godwin reeled in Li. Stute, as Anderson closed on Le. Stute for the lead. Anderson took a look in turn 4 on lap 18 as they lead duo caught slower traffic. As the white was shown Anderson made his move with the two making contact sending Le. Stute into the infield signs, while Li. Stute shot past to snare the win.
“The car handled good all night,” stated Li. Stute. “I couldn't get around my old man and Shannon Anderson finally got around me. At the end I saw my dad and Anderson down in the infield. Nothing else to do but take the win.”
“Mainly we just came down here to have some fun. It's a new motor so we're getting in tried out. We don't try to run for points. We usually run in Nebraska and Colorado. We really didn't change much to come race down here.
